About Yigebe Ethiopian Coffee
Grandma Yibege’s Story
Yigebashal Mulat (Grandma Yibege) was a wonderful woman who created community through coffee. Every day started with people in her kitchen enjoying a cup and her particular brand of humor!
Coffee was a big part of Yibege’s life right up until she passed in 2014. Each morning, she would gather friends and neighbors in her kitchen in Ethiopia. She would roast, grind, and brew every serving of coffee as people conversed and swapped stories.
Grandma Yibege completed this ritual three times daily: morning, midday, and just before bed. Interestingly, Ethiopians often drink coffee before bed without affecting their sleep. The coffee ritual is an opportunity for conversation in Ethiopia, whether it’s celebrations or reconciliations.
Every cup with Yigebe was an opportunity to enjoy her sense of humor, wisdom, and stories. She and many like her used coffee to form a community. We named our coffee shop after her, and we share her goals. It was only fitting when we started in 2023.
